During the summer of 2026, the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WCBVI) will host four one-week educational programs for school-aged students who are blind, visually impaired and deafblind.
The programs and student age ranges are as follows:
1) Literacy Alive: Summer Enrichment (Two strands- Entering Grades 3-5 and Entering Grades 6-8) Literacy Alive is an engaging summer program where students will explore entertaining mentor texts and use them as inspiration to create an original radio-style play. Through creative writing activities, collaboration, and sharing ideas, students will develop their voice while building literacy and communication skills. Throughout the week, students will go from the “writers’ room” to rehearsing their creation on stage. The program culminates in a final performance where their original radio drama comes to life.
2) Road to Employment (students aged 14-21 years who are still receiving school-aged special education services) Students in the Road to Employment program will: learn steps to get a first job and resources to support you, explore college and career readiness skills, explore individual career interests, and learn about careers.
3) Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) (students entering grades 3 – 8) Join us for a fun, hands-on week exploring all nine areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC): assistive technology, recreation and leisure, social skills, compensatory access, self-determination, orientation and mobility, career education, independent living skills, and sensory efficiency! This engaging program places a special focus on assistive technology and independent living skills through interactive, real-world activities. Participants will learn screen reader basics and enjoy “storybook cooking,” where they’ll follow recipes inspired by a food-themed story. It’s a creative and exciting way to build confidence, independence, and practical skills! Please note that strong touch tying skills will allow students to gain the most out of this program.
4) Adulting 101 (students aged 14-21 years who are still receiving school-aged special education services) Throughout the week, participants will build independence and confidence by tackling real-world skills and discussing topics that matter to young adults today. You’ll also develop meaningful social connections with peers who share your interests, creating a supportive community as you navigate the exciting journey of adulthood.
